Trenul Rheingold ce a circulat intre anii 1928 si 1939.
In data de 15 mai 1928 s-a pus in circulatie intre Hoek van Holland (Olanda) si Basel (Elvetia) un tren direct accelerat (Fern-D-Zug, "FFD" compus din vagoane noi deosebit de comode si elegante. Durata drumului de la Hoek van Holland la era Basel (700km) era de 11 ore. Trenurile au purtat numerele FFD101 si FFD102.

Trenurile FFD se compun din urmatoarele 4 feluri de vagoane: vagoane cl. 1 cu 28 locuri pe canapea; vagoane clasa 1 cu restaurant cu 20 locuri; vagoane clasa a 2-a cu 43 locuri pe canapea; vagoane clasa a 2-a cu restaurant cu 29 locuri. Asa ca la cate 2 vagoane era un restaurant.
Afara de acestea fiecare tren are si un vagon de bagaje.
Spre a satisface cat mai mult diferitele dorinte ale calatorilor, in vagoanele clasa 1, sunt prevazute incaperi mai mari (saloane) precum si compartimente mai mici cu 4 si 2 locuri atat pentru nefumatori cat si pentru fumatori.
Vagoanele de clasa a 2-a cuprind cate 2 saloane. Canapelele sunt fixe, comode, captusite, cu spatare inalte.

Vagoanele au fost fabricate de diverse companii:
WUMAG (Waggon- und Maschinenbau AG) in Görlitz,
Wagon factory Credé Brothers in Kassel,
Wegmann & Co. in Kassel,
Van der Zypen & Charlier in Cologne-Deutz,
Left-Hofmann-Lauchhammer in Breslau.

Toate vagoanele aveau boghiuri tip Görlitz II.
Locomotivele folosite. In Olanda de locomotivele cu abur 3700, 3800 si 3900, in Germania de Seria 18.4 si 18.5 (bayerische S 3/6), si 18.3 (badische IV h), BR 38 si din 1930 de BR 01. In Elvetia s-a folosit locomotiva electrica SBB Ae 4/7.

Trenul a fost prezentat in Buletinul CFR din anul 1928.
